Over the past 15years, cell phone use has increased by 800 percent in the US. Cell phone use has been shown to increase the chances of an automobile crash, and a recent Journal of Safety Research study warns pedestrians of walking and talking.
Researchers used the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for emergency department reports of injuries related to phone use. They identified 310 cases that occurred between 2000 and 2011. The majority of the patients were female and 40 years of age or younger. The most common mechanism of injury was a fall, and most patients were treated and released from the ED. Thankfully, no patients died from their injuries. Rates increased over the 12-year period.
